BA3 Chairs

BA3 Chair was designed by Ernest Race in 1945. The world’s first mass produced cast aluminium chair, after the British government encouraged designers and manufacturers to look at using new materials that were more available – like aluminium – because of a shortange of wood.

Aluminium was in abundance after the war due to the decommissioning of weapons and aircraft. BA3 side chairs were an immediate success, becoming the showpiece of the ‘Britain Can Make It’ exhibition of 1946.
